Psalms 51:12

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Psalms 51:12 (KJV)

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer of repentance after his sin with Bathsheba. He confesses and pleads for mercy, cleansing, and restoration. Verse 12 follows his request for a clean heart and a right spirit (Psalm 51:10).

David had known the joy of God’s salvation, but unconfessed sin had stolen that joy. He longs for the deep gladness that comes from a right relationship with God.

When David asks God to “restore unto me the joy of thy salvation,” he is not asking for a new salvation. The Hebrew word for “restore” means bringing back what was lost. David had lost the joy that accompanies salvation because of sin, and he wanted it back.

The “joy of thy salvation” is more than a feeling. It is the abiding gladness that comes from being right with God. Sin had disrupted that relationship, and David longed for joy to return.

In the second part, David asks God to “uphold me with thy free spirit.” This is also translated as a “willing spirit” or “generous Spirit.” It means a spirit that is willing, noble, and ready to obey. David knows his own spirit is broken and weak, so he asks God to sustain him by His Spirit, enabling obedience.

This verse connects with Psalm 51:10, where David asks God to create a clean heart and renew a right spirit. The request for a willing spirit follows naturally.

Scripture shows that true joy is found in salvation and that a willing, obedient spirit is a gift from God. The New Testament also teaches that the Holy Spirit empowers believers to live obediently (Galatians 5:16-25).

Like David, we may lose the joy of our salvation when we fall into sin. But God is willing to restore that joy to those who repent. When we confess, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us (1 John 1:9).

We can also pray for a willing spirit, asking God to sustain us and help us obey. Our own strength is not enough; we need God’s Spirit to uphold us.

Have you lost the joy of your salvation because of unconfessed sin? Take time to confess and ask God to restore that joy.

Do you rely on your own strength to obey, or do you ask God to uphold you with a willing spirit? Remember that a willing, obedient spirit is a gift from God, and He is ready to give it to those who ask.
