Psalms 64:1
Heare my voice, O God, in my praier; preserue my life from feare of the enemie. Psalms 64:1 (KJV)
Psalm 64 is attributed to David and is classified as a psalm of lament. In this opening verse David expresses deep distress and a urgent need for divine protection against his foes. He begins with a heartfelt plea, “Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer,” which reveals his confidence that God is attentive to the cries of His people. This cry for God’s attention underscores the psalmist’s trust that the Almighty listens and will respond.
The second clause, “preserve my life from fear of the enemy,” acknowledges the real threat posed by hostile adversaries. David recognizes that the fear generated by these enemies can overwhelm a person, and he looks to God as the only one who can safeguard him from such anxiety. The verse therefore combines a request for God’s listening ear with a request for His protective power.
Application today is clear. When we encounter challenges, threats, or opposition, we are invited to turn to God in prayer with the same confidence David displayed. We can pour out our fears and concerns before Him, trusting that He hears our petitions and will provide the protection and strength we need. The passage also reminds us of our dependence on God; like David, we should not rely on our own resources but acknowledge that true deliverance and security come from Him alone.
By trusting in God’s faithfulness and seeking His guidance, we can experience a peace that surpasses all understanding, even amid difficult circumstances. Psalm 64:1 thus serves as a timeless reminder to seek God’s attentive ear and His preserving power whenever fear threatens to dominate our lives.
