Psalms 68:10

Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor.

Psalms 68:10 (KJV)

Psalm 68 is a song of triumph, often linked to King David and the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. It celebrates God’s power, victory, and care for His people. In verse 10, the psalmist speaks of God’s congregation dwelling in the land, a picture of Israel settled and secure because of God’s faithfulness. This verse follows the promise that God refreshes His inheritance, showing His ongoing care for His people.

The word “congregation” can also mean “living creatures” or “beasts,” and some see here a hint of the Gentiles, who were once far off but are brought near by God’s grace. The verse stresses that God Himself prepared goodness for the poor. This is not earned favor but a gift from His own good pleasure. He proportioned His kindness so that His people would learn to depend on Him daily. In things spiritual, as well as temporal, God has provided of His goodness for the poor.

The congregation gathered to hear God’s word and to praise Him, as seen in Psalm 22:22 and Psalm 68:26. The land was blessed because it was the home of God’s people, not because of its own worth. God’s provision is entirely by His own good pleasure, and He keeps His people dependent upon Him.

God’s goodness to the poor is a consistent theme in Scripture. Christ showed special tenderness to the poor, spoke in their homes, and chose disciples from among them, including fishermen. For those with little, worship is often simpler, centered on the heart rather than on costly offerings. Believers are called to reflect God’s character by extending help and generosity to the needy.

This verse invites confidence in God’s provision. He prepares goodness for the poor, both in spiritual and material ways. As part of His congregation, we can trust that He has settled us in His care and will supply what we lack. Our response is to praise Him and to share His goodness with others.
