Psalms 22:22
“I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.”
Context:Psalm 22 is a Messianic psalm written by King David, and it is often referred to as a prophetic psalm concerning the sufferings and glory of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. It begins with a cry of anguish but ends with a declaration of praise and victory. This particular verse, Psalm 22:22, is a significant turning point in the psalm.
Declaration of God’s Name:The psalmist declares that he will proclaim or declare God’s name to his brethren. In the context of the psalm, this proclamation can be seen as a declaration of God’s faithfulness, mercy, and salvation. It signifies the psalmist’s resolve to make known God’s character and deeds to others.
Jesus as the Fulfillment:In the New Testament, this verse is recognised as a prophecy fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 2:11-12 quotes Psalm 22:22, applying it to Jesus: “For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, ‘I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.’”
Jesus’ Declaration:Jesus, as the Messiah, fulfilled this verse by proclaiming the name of God the Father to His disciples and the people at large. He revealed the character and nature of God through His teachings, miracles, and ultimately, through His sacrificial death and resurrection.
Congregation and Praise:The psalmist declares that he will praise God in the midst of the congregation. In the New Testament, the term “congregation” is often associated with the gathering of believers, the church. This verse points to Jesus offering praise to God the Father in the midst of His followers, signifying His role as the worship leader and example for the believers.
Application for Believers:As believers, we can also learn from this verse. We are called to proclaim and declare the name of God to others, sharing His love, grace, and salvation. We are to praise Him in the midst of the congregation, both in our individual lives and in corporate worship settings.
In conclusion, Psalm 22:22 is a prophetic verse that finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ. It speaks of Jesus’ proclamation of God’s name to His brethren and His praise in the midst of the congregation. As believers, we are also called to proclaim God’s name and offer praise in our lives, both individually and within the community of believers.
