“The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it.”

Historical Context:Psalm 68 is attributed to King David, and it is believed to have been written as a song of victory after a military triumph. The psalm celebrates God’s power, sovereignty, and deliverance for His people.

  • “The Lord gave the word”:

This phrase acknowledges that God is the source of divine revelation. He speaks and communicates His will to His people. In this context, it likely refers to God’s command to go into battle or His promise of victory. It emphasizes the authority and power of God’s word.

“Great was the company of those that published it”:This line suggests that there were numerous individuals who proclaimed or shared God’s word. They acted as messengers, heralds, or ambassadors of God’s message. The use of the word “company” suggests a multitude of people coming together for a common purpose.

Application and Lessons:a. Spreading God’s Word: The verse highlights the importance of proclaiming and spreading God’s word. It reminds us that sharing the truth and message of God is significant and can have a great impact. As believers, we are called to be witnesses and share the gospel with others.

b. Unity in Sharing: The phrase “great was the company” suggests that a collective effort was involved in publishing God’s word. This emphasizes the power of unity and collaboration among believers. Together, we can have a greater influence on the world as we work together in sharing the truth of God’s message.

c. God’s Word as a Weapon: In the context of a military triumph, this verse suggests that God’s word is a powerful weapon. It can bring victory and deliverance to His people. As believers, we can rely on God’s word as a source of strength and guidance in our spiritual battles.

d. Trusting in God’s Word: This verse encourages us to trust in the word of the Lord. It reminds us that God’s word is reliable, and He fulfils His promises. By placing our faith in His word, we can experience His deliverance and victory in various situations.

In conclusion, Psalm 68:11 emphasises the authority and power of God’s word and the significance of sharing it. It encourages us to spread the truth, work together, trust in God’s word, and rely on it as a weapon against the challenges we face.
