Context

Psalm 67 is a song of thanksgiving and a prayer for God’s blessing. It echoes the Aaronic blessing in Numbers 6:24-26, where God’s face shines on His people. The preceding verse asks God to be merciful and to cause His face to shine. This verse then gives the purpose of that blessing: that God’s way may be known on earth and His saving health among all nations. The psalmist sees God’s favour on Israel as a means for the whole world to know Him.

Meaning

The phrase “thy way” points to God’s righteous path, His character, and His purposes. Throughout Scripture, God’s way is linked with justice, love, mercy, and truth. The psalmist longs for this way to be recognised everywhere. “Saving health” translates the Hebrew word yeshu’ah, which means salvation or deliverance. This is not limited to physical healing; it includes God’s power to save, heal, and restore people completely. The prayer is that this salvation would reach all nations, not just Israel. God’s way is His method of grace in saving sinners, contrived in Christ, accomplished by Him, and applied by the Spirit. It is also the way of sinners to God through Christ.

Biblical connections

This verse is often called missionary because it envisions the global spread of God’s salvation. God’s way is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). The Gospel is also called “the way of God” in Acts 18:25. The psalmist’s desire looks forward to the time when all nations will praise God, as seen in Psalm 67:3-5. Those who have tasted God’s goodness naturally want others to know it too. All people are bound to walk in God’s way, all need His salvation, and there is enough in it for all.

God’s blessing on His people is never only for themselves. It is given so that His way and His salvation become known to the ends of the earth. All people need God’s salvation, and there is enough in it for everyone. This verse calls us to pray that both God’s way and His salvation would be made known to all. As we receive God’s mercy, we become part of His purpose to reveal Himself to the world.
