Psalms 71:1
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
Psalms 71:1 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 71 is a prayer of an older believer who has relied on the Lord from youth and now pleads for continued help and protection. The opening verse declares trust in the Lord and asks that such trust never result in confusion or shame. The Hebrew word rendered “confusion” carries the sense of disgrace or humiliation, often the outcome when a person’s confidence is misplaced. The psalmist’s plea is that his faith in God will not be disappointed.
Meaning
“In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust” is a deliberate act of placing confidence in God alone. This is not a vague hope but a settled reliance on God’s character, promises, and faithfulness. The phrase “let me never be put to confusion” asks God to spare the psalmist from shame or defeat, especially in the eyes of enemies. The connection between trust and shame is important: those who trust in the Lord will not be put to shame, because God is faithful to uphold those who take refuge in Him.
The verse closely parallels Psalm 31:1, where the same wording appears. In both places, trust is placed not in any human resource but in the Lord Jehovah, the covenant God. The Targum renders “in thee” as “in thy Word,” pointing to the essential Word who was with God and was God, making Him an equal object of faith. This trust includes entrusting all to God—body and soul, in time and eternity—and trusting Him for all things of providence and grace.
Application
Personal trust: Reflect on your own level of trust in God. Are there areas where you need to surrender control and rely on His guidance? Ask God to deepen your trust in Him.
Seeking refuge: When facing challenges or opposition, turn to God as your refuge. Seek His wisdom, strength, and protection in every situation, meditating on His Word and finding comfort in His presence.
Assurance of deliverance: Remember that God is faithful, and His deliverance is certain. Even when circumstances seem overwhelming, trust in His promises and have confidence in His ability to bring you through every trial.
Reflection
The psalmist’s prayer is a model for every believer. Trust in the Lord is not a one-time decision but a daily reliance on His faithfulness. When we place our confidence in God, we can be assured that He will never let us be put to shame. This verse invites us to examine the foundation of our hope and to rest in the God who is worthy of all trust.
