Psalms 70:4
“Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.”
Context: Psalm 70 is a short psalm attributed to King David. It is categorised as a psalm of supplication or urgent prayer, expressing the psalmist’s plea for God’s deliverance and help in times of trouble.
The verse begins by addressing “all those that seek thee,” referring to those who are actively pursuing a relationship with God. Seeking God implies a desire for His presence, guidance, and will. It reflects a heart that recognises its need for God and seeks Him diligently. As believers, we are called to seek the Lord wholeheartedly (Jeremiah 29:13).
The psalmist expresses the response of those who seek God when they find Him. He calls for rejoicing and gladness in the Lord. When we truly encounter God and experience His presence, there is a natural outpouring of joy and gladness in our hearts. It is an expression of gratitude and delight in who God is and what He has done for us.
The verse goes on to mention those who love God’s salvation. Salvation refers to the deliverance, redemption, and rescue that God provides to His people. Loving God’s salvation means embracing and cherishing the work of salvation that God has accomplished through Jesus Christ. It involves recognising our need for salvation and accepting it by faith.
The psalmist emphasises the continual declaration, “Let God be magnified.” To magnify God is to exalt Him, to make Him great in our lives, and to give Him the highest place of honour. When we magnify God, we acknowledge His greatness, power, and sovereignty. It involves praising Him, worshiping Him, and attributing all glory to Him.
