Psalms 78:5
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:
Psalms 78:5 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 78 is a historical psalm written by Asaph, a chief musician in David’s time. It recounts Israel’s story, showing both God’s faithfulness and the people’s unfaithfulness. The psalm warns later generations to learn from the past and remain faithful to God.
In this verse, the psalmist declares that God established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel. The “testimony” refers to God’s covenant with His people, including His promises and the revelation of His character. The “law” points to the Mosaic Law, the commands given through Moses to guide worship and daily life.
Meaning
God commanded the fathers of Israel to make these things known to their children. This was not a suggestion but a divine order. The family was the primary place where faith was to be taught and passed down. The testimony and law were not hidden; they were to be proclaimed openly so that each new generation would know God’s ways.
The law is called a testimony because it testifies of God’s will. The tablets of the testimony were placed in the ark, as seen in Exodus 25:16 and 25:22. This shows that God’s commands were central to Israel’s worship and relationship with Him.
Biblical connections
The Scriptures, including the Old Testament, testify of Christ, His person, and His work. Jesus Himself said that the Scriptures bear witness of Him, as recorded in John 5:39. The Gospel is also called the testimony of God, bearing witness to His love and grace through Jesus Christ.
Teaching children is not merely about passing on information. It is meant to shape their hearts and lives, leading them to trust in God and obey His commandments. This command is repeated throughout Scripture, showing its importance for the continuity of faith.
Application
As believers today, we have the same responsibility. We must teach our children, grandchildren, and young believers about God’s Word, His faithfulness, and His commands. This teaching equips them to live godly lives and carry the faith forward.
This command applies both in the home and in the church. Parents and church leaders share the duty of making God’s truth known. It is a command from God, not merely a good idea.
Reflection
The psalmist recounted Israel’s history as a cautionary tale. By reflecting on the past, we learn about God’s character and the consequences of obedience or disobedience. This knowledge helps us make choices that align with God’s will.
We must not forget God’s works or rebel against Him as Israel did. Instead, we should faithfully pass on His testimony and law, ensuring that each generation knows and follows Him.
