Psalms 78:55

He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

Psalms 78:55 (KJV)

Psalm 78 is a historical psalm attributed to Asaph, recounting Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It emphasizes God’s faithfulness despite Israel’s repeated disobedience and rebellion.

The immediate context shows God leading His people like a flock through the wilderness and bringing them to His holy border. Verse 55 describes God’s active role in settling Israel in Canaan, while the following verse notes that Israel still tested and provoked God despite this gracious provision.

The phrase “He cast out the heathen also before them” refers to God driving out the nations that inhabited Canaan. These were the seven nations listed in Deuteronomy 7:1: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

God “divided them an inheritance by line,” meaning He distributed the land among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joshua divided the land among the nine and a half tribes, while the other two and a half tribes had already received their portion on the east side of the Jordan. This distribution was done by lot, line, and measure, ensuring each tribe received its proper portion.

The verse concludes that God “made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.” This phrase primarily refers to their temporary state during the wilderness wanderings or conquest, rather than their permanent dwellings after fully inheriting Canaan. The Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God dwelled among His people, symbolized His presence during their journey and early settlement.

This verse highlights God’s faithfulness to His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as He gave the land to Israel as an inheritance. The precise division of the land demonstrates God’s meticulous care and His desire for each tribe to have its own territory.

Psalm 78:55 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It reveals His commitment to provide for His people and establish them in a place of blessing. As believers today, we can draw encouragement from this verse, knowing that God remains faithful to His Word and will provide for our needs.

It also underscores the importance of recognizing God’s presence in our lives, just as the Israelites acknowledged His dwelling among them. God’s sovereign power in fulfilling His covenant promises shows that He is the ultimate giver of rest and inheritance.

God’s provision is precise and orderly. Just as He measured the land for each tribe, He knows exactly what each of His children needs. His faithfulness does not depend on human obedience, though our response to His goodness matters deeply.
