Psalms 78:55

Listen to this article

He cast out the heathen also before them, and diuided them an inheritance by line: and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. Psalms 78:55 (KJV)

Context: Psalm 78 is a lengthy psalm that recounts the history of Israel’s relationship with God, focusing on the period of their wilderness wanderings after being delivered from slavery in Egypt.

The psalm highlights God’s faithfulness despite Israel’s repeated disobedience and rebellion.

God’s Faithful Provision: In verse 55, the psalmist emphasizes God’s active role in driving out the nations that inhabited the land of Canaan to make room for the Israelites.

This demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His promises and His commitment to provide for His people.

The phrase “He cast out the heathen also before them” refers to God’s driving out the nations that inhabited the land of Canaan to make room for the Israelites.

The verse continues, stating that God “divided them an inheritance by line.”

This refers to the distribution of land among the twelve tribes of Israel.

God allocated specific portions of the land to each tribe, providing for their physical needs and ensuring that they had a place to dwell.

This division of the land demonstrated God’s meticulous care and His desire for each tribe to have its own territory.

The verse concludes by saying that God “made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.”

This phrase primarily refers to their temporary state during the wilderness wanderings or conquest, rather than their permanent dwellings after inheriting Canaan.

The Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary where God dwelled among His people, symbolized God’s presence during their journey and early settlement.

Psalm 78:55 reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises.

It reveals His commitment to provide for His people and establish them in a place of blessing.

As believers today, we can draw encouragement from this verse, knowing that God remains faithful to His Word and will provide for our needs.

It also underscores the importance of recognizing God’s presence in our lives, just as the Israelites acknowledged His dwelling among them.
