Psalms 78:57

But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

Psalms 78 is a historical psalm by Asaph that reviews God’s faithful care for Israel from Egypt to the promised land. The phrase “deceitful bow” is a strong picture. In ancient warfare, a bow that is warped or cracked cannot send an arrow straight to its target. It looks useful but fails when needed. The bow metaphor shows that they appeared ready to serve God but did not fulfill His purposes.
