Psalms 78:57

But turned backe, and dealt vnfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitfull bowe. Psalms 78:57 (KJV)

Psalms 78 is a historical psalm written by Asaph that recounts the long‑term relationship between Israel and God. Throughout the psalm the writer emphasizes God’s steadfast love and mercy even as the people repeatedly turn away from Him. Verse 57 brings this tension into sharp focus, describing the Israelites as turning back and dealing unfaithfully like their fathers, a phrase that points to a generational pattern of rebellion.

The image of a “deceitful bow” serves as a vivid metaphor. In the ancient world a faulty bow could not be trusted to hit its target; likewise the people of Israel were deviating from the straight path of righteousness, failing to remain steady in their commitment to God. This spiritual waywardness is highlighted by the repeated cycles of idolatry and disobedience, despite the nation’s experience of God’s miracles and provision.

For today’s believers the verse offers a clear warning against the allure of worldly temptations and the danger of falling into the same patterns of unfaithfulness. It calls the community of faith to learn from Israel’s mistakes, to guard against repeating the errors of the past, and to remain steadfast in obedience to God’s commands.

At the same time the psalmist does not abandon the truth of God’s faithfulness. Throughout the larger composition the writer records numerous instances where God showed compassion, mercy, and steadfast love toward His people, even when they strayed. This dual emphasis reminds Christians that while human frailty is inevitable, God’s covenant love endures.

In application, the passage encourages believers to seek God’s guidance and strength, to hold fast to the truth, and to walk in His ways with confidence. By remembering the cautionary message of Psalm 78:57, we are invited to trust in God’s unwavering faithfulness and to pursue a life marked by faithful obedience rather than the deceitful aim of a broken bow.
