Psalms 78:65

Listen to this article

“Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.”

Psalm 78:65 (KJV):

This verse is part of Psalm 78, which is attributed to Asaph, one of the musicians appointed by King David to lead worship in the tabernacle. Psalm 78 recounts the history of Israel’s relationship with God, emphasizing the importance of remembering and learning from their past experiences.

Now, let’s analyze the specific verse, Psalm 78:65:

“Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep”:This phrase is figurative language used to describe God’s intervention in response to the actions of His people. It emphasizes the idea that God had been seemingly inactive or silent for a period, and then suddenly, He “awakes” and takes action. It conveys the sense that God’s intervention is powerful and unexpected, just as if He had been roused from a deep slumber.

“Like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine”:This comparison draws an analogy between the Lord’s awakening and the behaviour of a strong, joyous warrior who shouts victoriously under the influence of wine. It conveys the idea that God’s intervention is vigorous, exuberant, and triumphant.

Overall, this verse portrays God’s intervention on behalf of His people in a dramatic and powerful manner. It suggests that despite appearances of God’s silence or inactivity, He remains fully aware and capable of acting decisively when the time is right.

As with any study of the Bible, it is essential to consider the context of the verse within the entire Psalm and within the broader biblical narrative. This will provide a deeper understanding of the passage and its significance in relation to the overall message of Scripture.

Note: The interpretation provided here is based on the text itself and common understandings of the language used. Different scholars and commentators may have nuanced interpretations, and it is always valuable to consult multiple sources and engage in personal study and reflection when examining Scripture.
