“He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.”

Psalm 78:70 (KJV):

"He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds."

Context:Psalm 78 is a historical psalm that recounts the faithfulness and mercy of God throughout Israel’s history, particularly focusing on the Exodus and the wilderness wanderings. It emphasises the importance of passing down God’s commands and works to future generations. Verse 70 stands as a pivotal moment where God’s choice of David as king is highlighted.

David’s Background:David was a shepherd before he became king. He tended his father’s sheep in the fields of Bethlehem. Despite his humble occupation, God saw David’s heart and anointed him to be the future king of Israel.

Divine Choice:The verse acknowledges God’s active role in selecting David as His servant. It highlights that it was not merely David’s personal ambition or human favour that brought him to the throne; rather, it was God who chose and appointed him. God’s choice of David reveals His sovereignty and His ability to see beyond external appearances, looking at the heart of an individual.

Faithfulness and Character:David’s selection implies that he possessed qualities that made him suitable for God’s purposes. These qualities included his faithfulness, bravery, leadership skills, and his heart for God. Throughout his life, David demonstrated a deep trust in the Lord, even in challenging circumstances.

A Pattern for Us:David’s journey from being a shepherd to becoming a king offers encouragement and inspiration for believers today. It reminds us that God can choose and use anyone, regardless of their background or status. It emphasises the importance of faithfulness in our daily lives, even in seemingly insignificant tasks, as God looks at our hearts.

Jesus, the Greater David:The choice of David as king foreshadows Jesus Christ, who is often referred to as the “Son of David.” Jesus, a descendant of David, came as the ultimate King and Shepherd of God’s people. He embodies the qualities of David, being faithful, brave, and having a heart aligned with God’s will.
