Psalms 78:69

Listen to this article

“And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.”

Context:Psalm 78 is a lengthy psalm attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during King David’s time. It is a historical psalm that recounts the faithfulness of God to the people of Israel despite their rebellion and disobedience. The psalm emphasises the importance of remembering and passing down God’s works and commands to future generations.

  • Sanctuary:In verse 69, the psalmist refers to the sanctuary or the temple that God built in Jerusalem. It was a place of worship and the central location for the Israelites to offer sacrifices and seek God’s presence. The temple was a physical representation of God’s dwelling among His people.
  • Like high palaces:The psalmist describes God’s sanctuary as being like high palaces. This imagery emphasises the grandeur and majesty of the temple. It highlights the fact that God’s dwelling place was not a simple structure but a place of great beauty and significance.
  • Earth established forever:The psalmist compares God’s sanctuary to the earth, stating that it has been established forever. This implies the enduring nature of God’s dwelling place. The temple represented God’s presence among His people and symbolised the eternal covenant between God and Israel.
  • Spiritual significance:Beyond the physical temple, this verse carries spiritual significance for believers today. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul speaks of believers as the temple of God, where the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 6:19). As individuals and as the body of Christ, we are called to be a sanctuary for God’s presence, reflecting His glory and representing Him in the world.
  • Application:Reflecting on Psalm 78:69 reminds us of the importance of creating sacred spaces for God in our lives. Just as God established a physical temple in the Old Testament, we should prioritise cultivating a deep and intimate relationship with Him. We can do this through prayer, worship, studying His Word, and seeking His presence daily. As we offer our lives as a dwelling place for God, we can experience His guidance, peace, and the transformational power of His Spirit.
