Psalms 79:12

Listen to this article

“Render unto our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.”

This verse is part of Psalm 79, which is a psalm attributed to Asaph. It is a lamentation and prayer for God’s mercy and deliverance for the people of Israel, particularly in a time of distress and judgment.

In verse 12, the psalmist appeals to God to act justly and righteously in dealing with their neighbors who have reproached or mocked the Lord.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its key themes and lessons: “Render unto our neighbors sevenfold”: This phrase expresses the psalmist’s desire for divine justice. The psalmist asks God to repay or render to their neighbors seven times the reproach they have directed towards the Lord. The number “seven” in the Bible often symbolizes completion or fullness, indicating a thorough retribution.

“Into their bosom”: The psalmist asks that the retribution be placed into the bosom of their neighbors. The bosom is a symbol of intimate proximity and personal responsibility. It signifies that the consequences of their reproach should be experienced personally and directly by those who have dishonored God.

“Their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord”: The reproach mentioned here refers to the mocking, insults, or contempt directed at God. The psalmist emphasizes that the reproach was not only against themselves but also against the Lord. This highlights the psalmist’s concern for God’s honor and righteousness, desiring that God’s name be vindicated.

Divine justice:The psalmist’s plea for retribution reveals a recognition that God is the ultimate judge who deals justly with those who oppose Him. It is a reminder that God sees and weighs every action, and there will be consequences for those who mock or dishonor Him.

God’s honor:The psalmist’s concern for God’s reputation and honor is evident. As believers, we should also desire to uphold the name of the Lord and seek His glory. We can take solace in the fact that God is ultimately responsible for defending His own honor and will bring justice in due time.

The value of prayer:This verse is part of a prayer to God. It reminds us of the importance of bringing our concerns, including injustices and reproaches we face, before the Lord. Prayer is a way for us to express our emotions, seek God’s intervention, and find solace in His presence.

It’s important to note that this verse reflects the psalmist’s personal plea in a specific context. As Christians, we should also consider other teachings of the Bible, such as Jesus’ command to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). While we can pray for God’s justice, we should also strive to show mercy and forgiveness, following the example of Christ.

In summary, Psalms 79:12 (KJV) reflects the psalmist’s plea for divine justice and the vindication of God’s honor. It teaches us the importance of recognizing God as the ultimate judge and seeking His intervention through prayer. As believers, we should desire to honor God’s name and trust in His righteous dealings, while also extending mercy and forgiveness to others.
