Psalms 82:5
“They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course.”
Context:Psalm 82 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians in King David’s time. It is a psalm that portrays God as the supreme Judge who holds authority over all the gods or rulers of the earth. In this particular verse, the psalmist speaks of those who lack knowledge and understanding, walking in darkness, and the resulting disruption in the foundations of the earth.
Lack of Knowledge and Understanding: The verse begins by stating that “They know not, neither will they understand.” This highlights a crucial aspect of the problem addressed in the psalm. The individuals referred to here are ignorant or uninformed, and they lack the understanding of God’s ways and the principles of justice. It emphasizes the importance of seeking wisdom and knowledge, particularly about God and His Word.
Walking in Darkness: The verse continues, “They walk on in darkness.” Walking in darkness symbolizes living in a state of spiritual blindness, separated from the light of truth and righteousness. It suggests that those who lack knowledge and understanding are unable to discern the path of righteousness and often find themselves on the wrong course. This imagery serves as a warning against a life devoid of God’s guidance and wisdom.
Disruption of Foundations: The verse concludes by stating, “all the foundations of the earth are out of course.” Here, the psalmist uses poetic language to describe the consequences of ignorance and spiritual darkness. The foundations of the earth represent the moral, social, and spiritual order established by God. When people lack knowledge and understanding, the result is a distortion or upheaval of these foundations, leading to disorder, injustice, and a breakdown of societal norms.
Application:
- Pursue Knowledge and Understanding:As believers, we should seek to grow in knowledge and understanding of God’s Word. This involves studying the Scriptures, seeking wisdom, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding. By doing so, we can avoid walking in darkness and make wise choices aligned with God’s principles.
- Embrace God’s Light:Walking in darkness leads to confusion, sin, and a departure from God’s ways. We should strive to live in the light of God’s truth, allowing His Word to illuminate our paths. This requires cultivating a personal relationship with God through prayer, meditation, and a willingness to submit our lives to His guidance.
- Uphold God’s Foundations:The disruption of the foundations of the earth signifies a departure from God’s order and justice. As believers, we are called to uphold God’s principles in our personal lives and society. This includes seeking justice, showing compassion, and living in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
