Psalms 82:7

But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

Psalms 82:7 (KJV)

Psalm 82 is attributed to Asaph, a Levite and worship leader during King David’s time. In this psalm, God stands in the divine council and addresses unjust rulers and judges who have neglected their duties. In verse 6, God calls these rulers “gods” and “sons of the Most High.” This does not mean they are divine, but it shows that they represent God’s authority on earth. In verse 7, God pronounces judgment on them.

The phrase “ye shall die like men” means that these rulers, despite their high position, are mortal. They will face death just like every other human being. The phrase “fall like one of the princes” indicates that their fall from power will be like that of any other ruler. Their dignity and office will not protect them from judgment. God has given judges a sacred role, but that role will not shield them if they abuse it. The verse strips away any false sense of security that comes from rank or position.

This verse connects with Hebrews 9:27, which says it is appointed for people to die once, and after that comes judgment. The same truth appears here: even those who hold authority must face death and give an account. Their power is temporary, but God’s judgment is certain. Death levels all people, making the wise and the fool, the king and the peasant, alike.

This verse is a warning to all who hold authority. Rulers, judges, and leaders are entrusted with upholding justice and protecting the weak. When they fail, they will face the same fate as all mortals. It is a call to humility, reminding leaders that their power is limited and that they must use it wisely for God’s purposes. The broader context of the psalm calls for God to arise and judge the earth, for He shall inherit all nations.

For every reader, this verse is a reminder that life on earth is temporary. Regardless of status or position, we will all face mortality. It encourages us to consider the weight of our choices and actions, knowing that we are accountable to God for how we use the time and resources He has given us. Death levels all people, and only God’s judgment remains.
