Psalms 82:8
“Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.”
1. Context: The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers written by various authors, including King David. Psalm 82 is attributed to Asaph, one of the Levitical singers and musicians appointed by David. This particular psalm addresses the injustice and oppression carried out by unjust rulers and judges.
2. God’s call for justice: The psalm begins by portraying God as the supreme Judge in the divine council, surrounded by other heavenly beings called “gods” or “sons of the Most High.” However, these gods are being rebuked for their failure to administer justice and defend the weak and needy.
3. God’s command to arise: In verse 8, the psalmist calls upon God to arise and judge the earth. This is a plea for divine intervention and a cry for justice to prevail in the world. The psalmist recognizes that only God has the authority and power to establish true justice and righteousness.
4. God’s inheritance of nations: The verse concludes with the declaration that God shall inherit all nations. This statement signifies God’s sovereignty over all the earth and all people. It emphasizes that, ultimately, every nation will be under God’s rule and subject to His judgment.
5. Application:
- a. Trusting in God’s justice: As believers, we can find comfort and hope in knowing that God is a just Judge. Even when human authorities fail to administer justice, we can trust that God will ultimately bring about justice in His time.
- b. Advocacy for the oppressed: We are called to be agents of justice in the world. Just as God rebuked the unjust rulers and judges in the psalm, we should actively advocate for the rights of the oppressed and marginalized. This includes standing against injustice and working towards a more just society.
- c. God’s sovereignty over all nations: The declaration that God shall inherit all nations reminds us that God’s plan extends beyond any particular nation or kingdom. It emphasizes the universal authority and rule of God. As believers, we should remember that our allegiance is ultimately to God’s kingdom and seek to align our lives with His purposes.
