“But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.”
Psalm 94:22 (KJV):
“But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.”
Context of Psalm 94:Psalm 94 is attributed to the authorship of King David. It is a lament psalm, expressing the psalmist’s distress over the oppression of the wicked and the apparent lack of justice. The psalmist cries out to God for help and vindication.
Understanding Psalm 94:22:
In verse 22, the psalmist proclaims a declaration of faith in the Lord. The psalmist acknowledges that the Lord is their defense and that God is their refuge, specifically referring to God as “the rock.” This verse serves as a declaration of trust and confidence in God’s ability to protect and provide safety.
God as our defense:By stating that the Lord is their defense, the psalmist recognizes that God is their protector, shield, and refuge. In times of trouble or when facing enemies, the psalmist finds solace in knowing that God is their defender. It acknowledges that our ultimate security lies in the hands of God, who has the power to shield and deliver us from harm.
God as the rock of refuge:Referring to God as the “rock” emphasizes His stability, reliability, and steadfastness. Just as a physical rock provides a secure and unmovable foundation, the psalmist finds refuge and security in God. This imagery suggests that no matter how turbulent or uncertain the circumstances may be, God remains a firm and trustworthy source of protection.
