Psalms 94:22

But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.

Context

Psalm 94 is a lament, often linked to King David. The writer cries out against the proud and wicked who oppress the helpless, asking God to judge them. In verse 22, the tone shifts from complaint to confident trust. After describing the dangers around him, the psalmist declares that the Lord himself is his defence and refuge.

Meaning

The word “defence” pictures God as a protector and shield. The psalmist does not rely on his own strength, but on the Lord who stands between him and harm. The phrase “the rock of my refuge” uses a strong image. A rock is stable, unmovable, and safe. In a rocky land, people hid in caves and high places for safety. So God is a secure place where the believer can hide from danger.

Biblical connections

This verse is a turning point in the psalm. Earlier, the writer complained that the wicked seemed to win. Here he affirms that God remains the believer’s ultimate security. The same rock imagery appears in Psalm 18:2, where God is called “my rock, and my fortress.” That connection shows a consistent trust in God’s protection throughout the Psalter.

Application

When life seems unfair and evil appears to succeed, this verse calls us to remember that God is our defence. We can bring our complaints to him, but we must also rest in his protection. Our security does not depend on circumstances, but on the unchanging character of God.

Do we truly treat God as our rock? When trouble comes, we often look for human solutions first. This verse invites us to make the same personal confession as the psalmist: the Lord is my defence, and my God is the rock of my refuge.
