Psalms 94:21

Posted on 18 May at 15:14
Listen to this article

“They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.”

Context:To understand the meaning of this verse, it’s important to consider the context of the entire psalm. Psalm 94 is a plea for God’s intervention and justice in the face of wickedness and oppression. The psalmist is troubled by the arrogance and injustice of evildoers and calls on God to arise as the righteous Judge.

The psalmist laments that the wicked gather together against the soul of the righteous. This gathering may refer to the wicked conspiring or plotting against those who live righteously and follow God’s ways. The righteous are often targeted by the wicked because their lives and actions serve as a contrast and rebuke to the sinful ways of the world.

The second part of the verse highlights another aspect of the wicked’s actions. Not only do they gather against the righteous, but they also condemn innocent blood. This could refer to their unjust acts of violence, persecution, or false accusations, resulting in the shedding of innocent blood. It emphasises the wickedness of their deeds and the urgency for God to bring justice.

This verse serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict between righteousness and wickedness in the world. As believers, we may face opposition, persecution, or false accusations because of our commitment to God’s ways. However, this verse also assures us that God sees and knows the actions of the wicked. It encourages us to trust in God’s justice and to seek His intervention when faced with injustice.

The psalmist continues to pray for God’s intervention throughout the psalm, expressing confidence in God’s ability to bring judgment and justice. The following verses (Psalm 94:22-23) assure the psalmist and the righteous that the Lord will be their defence and refuge. They declare that God will repay the wicked for their evil deeds and will uphold the cause of justice.
