Psalms 94:21

They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

Context

Psalm 94 is a plea for God to act as Judge against proud and cruel oppressors. The psalmist sees wicked people acting as if God does not see their deeds. In this verse, the enemy is not a single person but a group that joins together with purpose.

The Hebrew phrase for “gather themselves together” suggests banding like troops or an army. This is not random violence; it is organized opposition. The wicked plan together against the life of the righteous, and they also condemn the innocent to death. Their attack may be through false courts, lies, or open persecution.

Meaning

The “soul of the righteous” means the whole life of a person who trusts God. The wicked target such people because their faithful lives expose the evil of their own ways. The second action, condemning innocent blood, shows a corrupt legal process. The innocent are declared guilty and put to death, so their blood is shed without cause.

This verse describes a deep injustice. Yet it also shows that God sees the plot and the false judgment. The psalmist does not hide the danger, but he brings it honestly before God.
