Listen to this article

“Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.”

Context:Psalm 97 is a psalm of praise and exaltation of God’s sovereignty and righteousness. It emphasizes the Lord’s reign over the earth and the response of His people to His rule. Verse 10 serves as an instruction to those who love the Lord and provides insight into God’s character and actions.

Loving the Lord:The verse begins with an address to those who love the Lord. Loving God involves having a genuine affection, devotion, and obedience towards Him. It is a response to God’s love for us (1 John 4:19) and involves a deep relationship with Him.

Hating evil:The verse continues by instructing those who love the Lord to hate evil. This implies a strong stance against anything that is contrary to God’s character, commands, and will. As followers of God, we are called to reject and distance ourselves from evil in all its forms, including sin, injustice, falsehood, and wickedness.

God’s preservation:The verse highlights that God preserves the souls of His saints. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness and protection towards those who belong to Him. God is intimately involved in safeguarding the spiritual well-being and eternal destiny of His people. It is an assurance that God watches over His followers and cares for their welfare.

Deliverance from the wicked:The verse concludes by emphasizing that God delivers His saints from the hand of the wicked. This reveals God’s power and authority to rescue His people from the clutches of their enemies and oppressors. God’s deliverance can manifest in various ways, such as physical protection, spiritual strength, guidance, and ultimately, eternal salvation.

Application:

  • Psalm 97:10:encourages believers to align their lives with God’s standards. It reminds us of the importance of cultivating a genuine love for the Lord and maintaining a steadfast commitment to righteousness. We are called to actively resist and reject evil while trusting in God’s preservation and deliverance. As we pursue a lifestyle characterized by love for God and hatred for evil, we can experience His faithfulness, protection, and deliverance in our lives.
