Context
Psalm 97 is a royal psalm that celebrates the Lord’s reign over the whole world. It pictures His glory, power, and majesty, and it calls the earth to rejoice because He rules with righteousness and justice. The verse stands as the climax of this praise, declaring that the Lord alone is supreme over all creation and over every so-called god.
Meaning
The first line, “high above all the earth,” teaches that God’s authority is universal. It is not limited to one nation, one temple, or one people. His rule reaches every corner of the world, and nothing in creation lies outside His control. The Hebrew title for God here is “Elyon,” meaning “Most High,” a name that stresses His transcendence and His place above every power.
The second line, “exalted far above all gods,” speaks directly to the ancient world of many idols and deities. The psalmist does not merely say that the Lord is better than other gods. He declares that the Lord is infinitely higher than them all. These other gods are not rivals; they are powerless and false.
