Psalms 97:10

Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

Psalms 97:10 (KJV)

Psalm 97 celebrates the Lord’s sovereign reign over the earth. The psalmist calls the righteous to rejoice in God’s rule and righteousness. Verse 10 turns directly to those who love the Lord, giving them a clear command and a double promise. The verse stands as a practical conclusion to the psalm’s vision of God’s majesty.

The command “hate evil” is strong and deliberate. It is not a mild dislike but a firm rejection of everything contrary to God’s character, will, and law. Because sin brings ruin and is hateful to God, those who love Him must also hate what He hates. This hatred is not merely an emotion; it leads to shunning and avoiding evil in all its forms.

The verse then gives assurance: God preserves the souls of His saints. This preservation is not only physical but concerns the very souls of the faithful, showing His protective care over their spiritual lives. The “hand of the wicked” represents the power and influence of evil people, from which God rescues His own. This deliverance may come as physical protection, spiritual strength, guidance, or ultimately eternal salvation.

Loving God is the foundation for hating evil. As 1 John 4:19 reminds us, we love because He first loved us. Our love for God is a response to His love and leads us to align our affections with His. The verse links the believer’s duty with God’s faithful action: we hate evil, and He preserves and delivers. This call to hate evil is grounded in love for God; it is a natural outflow of genuine devotion. The verse also implies that those who love God can trust in His protection, even in the face of wickedness.

  • Examine your affections. A genuine love for God naturally produces a hatred for what opposes Him.

  • Actively resist and reject evil in your daily choices, including sin, injustice, and falsehood.

  • Trust in God’s preservation and deliverance, even when facing opposition or trouble.

This verse does not promise a life free from trouble, but it assures that God is the ultimate preserver and deliverer of His saints. As you pursue a lifestyle of love for God and hatred for evil, you can rest in His sovereign care. He watches over your soul and will rescue you from the hand of the wicked. This is a call to both moral vigilance and confident faith, knowing that God’s care extends to your very soul.
