Psalms 104:15

“And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.”

Context:Psalms 104 is a hymn of praise to God for His creation and provision for all living creatures. It describes the magnificence of God’s work in nature, including the earth, sky, and sea, and how He sustains and provides for His creation.

Wine:The verse mentions wine as something that “maketh glad the heart of man.” Wine, in moderation, has been enjoyed by people throughout history. It symbolizes joy, celebration, and blessings. In the biblical context, wine is often associated with God’s provision and blessings (Psalm 104:14-15; Ecclesiastes 10:19; John 2:1-11). However, it’s important to note that excessive drinking and drunkenness are condemned in the Bible (Proverbs 20:1; Ephesians 5:18).

Oil:The verse also speaks of oil that makes the face shine. In biblical times, oil was used for various purposes, including anointing, healing, and as a cosmetic. It represents God’s favor, blessing, and anointing (Psalm 23:5; Isaiah 61:3). In a spiritual sense, it symbolizes the presence of the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:27).

Bread:The verse mentions bread as something that strengthens the heart of man. Bread is a staple food that provides nourishment, sustenance, and satisfaction. In a broader sense, bread represents God’s provision, both physically and spiritually. Jesus referred to Himself as the “bread of life” (John 6:35) and emphasized the importance of partaking in Him for spiritual sustenance.

Application:Psalm 104:15 reminds us of God’s provision and the blessings He has bestowed upon us. It highlights the joy and celebration that comes from His provision (wine), the favor and anointing we experience in His presence (oil), and the nourishment and satisfaction found in His provision (bread). It encourages us to recognize and appreciate the abundant blessings God provides in our lives.

  • Remember, while these verses celebrate the goodness of God’s creation and His provision, it is important to approach them with discernment and moderation, understanding the principles and wisdom the Bible teaches regarding their use.

May this study deepen your understanding of Psalm 104:15 and its significance in praising God for His abundant provision and blessings.
