Psalms 104:15

And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.

Psalms 104:15 (KJV)

Psalm 104 is a hymn of praise to God for His creation and continual care for every living creature. Verse 15 belongs to a section that tells how God causes the ground to bring forth food for people. The verse names three gifts: wine, oil, and bread. These are not only physical blessings; they also point to joy, refreshment, and strength for the inner life.

Wine is said to “maketh glad the heart of man.” In the Bible, wine often stands for joy and celebration, and it is a sign of God’s blessing. Yet Scripture also warns against drunkenness, so the gift must be used with wisdom. Oil makes the face shine. In ancient times, oil was used for anointing, healing, and daily care. A shining face suggests health, gladness, and divine favor. Bread strengthens the heart, meaning it gives physical energy and vitality. Bread is the staple food that supports life and satisfies hunger.

These three gifts appear together in Psalm 104:14-15 as part of God’s provision. Wine is linked with gladness in Ecclesiastes 10:19, and Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding in John 2:1-11, showing that wine can be a sign of joy. Oil is connected with anointing and favor in Psalm 23:5 and Isaiah 61:3. Bread is central to Jesus’ words in John 6:35, where He calls Himself the “bread of life,” giving spiritual nourishment. Each gift teaches that God cares for the whole person, body and spirit.

This verse calls us to thank God for His daily provision. We can enjoy the good gifts He gives, but we must use them with moderation and discernment. Wine, oil, and bread remind us that God supplies both our needs and our joys. When we receive these gifts with gratitude, we honor the Giver. We also learn to trust God to care for us, just as He cares for all creation.

Consider how God has provided for you today. Do you see His goodness in the food you eat and the joy you experience? Let this verse lead you to praise Him for His abundant care. May your heart be glad, your face shine with His favor, and your strength be renewed as you rest in His provision.
