Psalms 104:28

That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

Psalms 104:28 (KJV)

Psalm 104 is a hymn of praise to God for His wisdom and power shown in creation. This verse sits at the climax of a section describing how every living creature depends on God for food. The psalmist sees the whole world as sustained by the Lord’s constant care. The verse has two parallel clauses that together show this dependence clearly.

The first clause, “That thou givest them they gather,” teaches that God is the ultimate provider. Creatures do not produce their own food; they receive what He gives and then gather it. Some gather for immediate use, while others, like the ant, gather for the future. The second clause, “thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good,” uses the picture of an open hand to show God’s generosity and readiness to bless. An open hand is a figure of speech for His liberality and bounty. When God opens His hand, His creatures are satisfied with good things. The result is not mere survival but fullness and satisfaction. The verse emphasizes total dependence on God’s sustaining power and His faithfulness in supplying the necessities of life.

This verse echoes the pattern of God providing manna for Israel in the wilderness. Just as the people gathered manna each day, all creatures gather what God supplies. The open hand of God also recalls His faithful care described throughout the Psalms, where He satisfies the desire of every living thing. The psalmist marvels at God’s sovereignty over all creation, and this verse is a clear picture of that rule in action.

We can respond with gratitude, recognizing that every good gift comes from God. We should trust His faithfulness, knowing He is aware of our needs and will supply them in His wisdom and timing. We can also gather the spiritual food He gives through His Word, taking it in by faith just as creatures gather their daily bread. The Israelites gathered manna by hand; we gather spiritual food by the hand of faith. This is a daily practice, not a one-time event.

This verse invites us to rest in God’s sovereignty over all creation. He who opens His hand to feed the birds and the beasts will not neglect His children. Our part is to receive what He gives with thankful hearts, confident that His provision is abundant and satisfying. God is the source of all good, and His care never fails.
