Psalms 104:30

Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

Context

Psalm 104 is a hymn of praise to God as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. The psalmist marvels at God’s works, including the heavens, the earth, the waters, and the provision of food for all living creatures. Verse 30 follows verse 29, where God hides His face and takes away breath, causing creatures to die and return to dust. Here the psalmist presents the contrast: when God sends forth His Spirit, creatures are created, and the face of the earth is renewed.

Meaning

The word “spirit” can be understood as the Holy Spirit, who was involved in the original creation (Genesis 1:2; Psalm 33:6). The primary meaning in this context, however, concerns the generation of new creatures to replace those that die, preserving their species and maintaining a constant succession. This renewal is a direct act of God’s providence, showing that His creative power is not limited to the past but is continuously at work, sustaining and refreshing the world.
