Let Israel now say: that his mercy endureth for euer. Psalms 118:2 (KJV)

Historical Context: Psalm 118 is a psalm of thanksgiving and is introduced in the Hebrew Bible with the heading “A song of ascents.” Its authorship is not specified, though some traditions associate it with King David and some scholars speculate about Davidic authorship, but this remains uncertain. The psalm is believed to have been composed after a significant victory or a time of deliverance, and it has long been used in worship.

Call to Israel: The verse begins with an invitation to the people of Israel, calling them to acknowledge and declare a specific truth about God’s character. It is a call to personal and communal reflection on God’s enduring mercy.

Acknowledging God’s Mercy: The phrase “his mercy endureth forever” emphasizes the everlasting and unwavering nature of God’s mercy. God’s mercy refers to His compassion, love, forgiveness, and kindness toward His people. It highlights that His mercy is not temporary or conditional but endures forever.

Implications for Israel: By encouraging Israel to proclaim this truth, the verse reminds the nation of God’s faithfulness and His commitment to His chosen people. It invites them to remember and celebrate God’s continuous and everlasting mercy that sustains and guides them throughout their history.

Application for Believers: Although this verse was initially addressed to Israel, it holds significance for all believers today. As followers of God, we can join in affirming and declaring God’s enduring mercy. It serves as a reminder that God’s mercy is not limited by time or circumstances but remains constant in our lives.

Gratitude and Worship: Psalm 118:2 encourages an attitude of thanksgiving and worship. When we reflect on God’s enduring mercy, it stirs within us a response of gratitude and praise. We are reminded of His goodness, faithfulness, and love, which motivates us to express our appreciation and adoration for Him.

Trusting in God’s Mercy: This verse also invites us to trust in God’s enduring mercy. Knowing that His mercy is everlasting provides comfort and assurance in times of difficulty, trials, or uncertainty. We can rely on His unwavering love and compassion, knowing that He will be faithful to His promises and will never abandon us.
