Psalms 119:37

Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.

Psalms 119:37 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Book of Psalms, and it is devoted to the value and importance of God’s law. Verse 37 is a prayer with two petitions. The psalmist first asks God to turn his eyes away from vanity, and then he asks God to quicken him in God’s way. The verse shows a believer who knows his own weakness and depends on God for both moral direction and spiritual life.

Vanity means anything empty, worthless, or lacking true significance. It includes worldly riches, honors, pleasures, and pursuits that do not align with God’s will. These things catch the eye and allure the heart. The psalmist does not ask for mere self-control; he asks God to turn his eyes away. This acknowledges that temptation is strong and that divine help is needed to overcome it. The request also extends to false doctrines and false worship, which can be deceptive and alluring.

The word “quicken” means to revive or to give life. The psalmist pleads for renewal and spiritual vitality in God’s ways. The two petitions belong together. Turning away from vanity is not merely negative; it is paired with a positive desire to be revived in God’s path. The verse contrasts the emptiness of the world with the life-giving nature of God’s way.

This verse reflects a broader biblical theme that God is the source of life and the one who revives His people. The psalmist does not rely on his own strength but asks God to act. This dependence on God for both moral direction and spiritual vitality is consistent with the teaching of the whole psalm, which repeatedly prays for understanding and obedience (Psalm 119:33-35).

In a world filled with distractions and temptations, we must be intentional about what we allow our eyes to focus on. Just as the psalmist sought God’s help to turn away from vanity, we should cultivate discernment and avoid fixating on things that hinder our spiritual growth. This includes not only avoiding sinful behavior but also being cautious about the influences we expose ourselves to, such as media, entertainment, and unhealthy desires.

We should also make it a habit to seek God’s guidance through prayer, reading His Word, and seeking godly counsel. By aligning our lives with God’s will, we can experience His blessings and walk in paths of righteousness. The request for God to quicken us highlights our need for divine intervention and empowerment. We cannot rely on our own strength or willpower alone to live according to God’s ways. It is through the work of the Holy Spirit in us that we are transformed and enabled to live in obedience.

This verse is a model of prayer. It combines confession of weakness with a plea for grace. The psalmist does not pretend to be strong; he admits that his eyes are drawn to vanity and that his heart needs reviving. We can pray the same prayer honestly, asking God to turn our eyes from what is empty and to renew our love for His ways. When we feel spiritually dull or distracted, this verse gives us words to ask God for the life only He can give.
