Psalms 119:33

Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.

Psalms 119:33 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses. It is an acrostic poem, and each section of eight verses begins with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalm consistently honours God’s Word and the blessings of following His statutes, commandments, and precepts.

The psalmist begins with a humble request: “Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes.” This is not a demand but a prayer of dependence. He knows that true understanding and wisdom come from God alone, not from human reasoning. The word “teach” implies more than gaining information; it is a plea for God to shape his heart and mind so he can live rightly.

The phrase “the way of thy statutes” points to a path of obedience. God’s statutes are His principles and laws for righteous living. The psalmist does not ask merely to know them but to walk in them. He longs for his actions, thoughts, and choices to align with God’s will. This is a desire for practical holiness, not just intellectual agreement.

The second half of the verse reveals his commitment: “and I shall keep it unto the end.” He promises to obey consistently, not for a short season but for his whole life. This shows trust in the sufficiency of God’s instruction. He believes that divine teaching enables enduring faithfulness. The prayer connects God’s guidance with the believer’s perseverance.

This verse echoes the pattern found throughout Psalm 119, where the writer repeatedly asks God to teach him His statutes (Psalm 119:12, 119:26). The same link between divine instruction and faithful living appears in Psalm 119:44, where the psalmist vows to keep God’s law continually. These connections show that the request in verse 33 is not isolated but reflects a consistent heart attitude.

Believers today can pray this verse with the same humility. We should approach Scripture with a teachable spirit, admitting our need for God’s guidance. We can ask Him to show us the way of His statutes, not just to inform us but to transform us.

  • Humbly seek God’s instruction: come to His Word with an open heart, ready to learn and change.

  • Desire to walk in obedience: let the goal be a life that matches God’s commands, not merely knowledge about them.

  • Trust in God’s Word: rely on it as a true and reliable guide, knowing that following it brings blessing.

The psalmist’s prayer reminds us that faithful living is a gift from God. We cannot keep His statutes by our own strength alone. We need His ongoing help to remain steadfast. This verse invites us to depend on God daily, asking Him to teach us and to sustain us until the end.
