Psalms 119:57

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.”

Psalms 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, consisting of 176 verses. It is a beautiful and profound psalm that focuses on the greatness and importance of God’s Word, emphasizing the value of following and obeying His commandments. Each section of this psalm is dedicated to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and verse 57 is found in the section corresponding to the Hebrew letter “Heth.”

In verse 57, the psalmist declares, “Thou art my portion, O Lord.” This statement reveals the psalmist’s deep understanding and acknowledgment of God’s significance in his life. By referring to God as his “portion,” the psalmist acknowledges that God is his inheritance, his greatest possession, and the source of his satisfaction and fulfillment. The psalmist recognizes that nothing in this world can compare to the value and worth of having a personal relationship with the Lord.

The psalmist then continues, “I have said that I would keep thy words.” Here, the psalmist expresses his commitment to keeping and obeying God’s words. It reflects a deliberate choice and a firm decision to align his life with God’s will. The psalmist recognizes the importance of God’s instructions, teachings, and commandments, and declares his determination to abide by them faithfully.

This verse encapsulates an essential aspect of our relationship with God. When we acknowledge God as our portion, we acknowledge His rightful place as the center of our lives. We recognize that true satisfaction and fulfillment are found in a deep and meaningful connection with Him. Furthermore, as we commit to keeping God’s words, we demonstrate our desire to walk in obedience and align our lives with His divine will.

As we delve into the broader context of Psalms 119, we discover a recurring theme: the psalmist’s love for God’s law, His commandments, statutes, precepts, and words. The psalmist delights in meditating on God’s laws and seeks to understand and apply them in his life. This psalm serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of God’s Word as a guide for our lives and the source of wisdom, direction, and spiritual nourishment.
