Psalms 119:44

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.”

1. Context: Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its emphasis on God’s law and the psalmist’s deep devotion to it. This psalm consists of 22 sections, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Each section contains eight verses, and each verse within a section begins with the corresponding Hebrew letter.

2. The Importance of God’s Law: In this verse, the psalmist expresses a commitment to keeping God’s law continually. Throughout Psalm 119, the psalmist repeatedly emphasizes the importance and value of God’s law. The law refers to the instructions, commands, and teachings given by God to guide His people in righteous living.

3. A Personal Commitment: The psalmist’s statement reflects a personal commitment to obedience. It reveals a deep desire to live in accordance with God’s law and to make it a lifelong pursuit. It demonstrates the psalmist’s understanding that obedience to God’s law is not merely a one-time event but a continuous process that should extend throughout their entire life.

4. Perseverance and Continuity: The psalmist’s intention to keep God’s law continually for “ever and ever” reveals a desire for enduring faithfulness. It highlights the importance of perseverance and continuity in following God’s commands. This commitment extends beyond a specific moment or circumstance, emphasizing the psalmist’s determination to live according to God’s principles throughout their life.

5. Application to Believers Today: As believers today, we can draw several lessons from this verse. It encourages us to develop a personal commitment to obey God’s Word, recognizing its value and significance in our lives. It reminds us that obeying God is not a one-time event but a continual process requiring perseverance and consistency. We are called to live in obedience to God’s law, seeking His guidance and relying on His strength to help us walk in righteousness.

6. The Law and the New Covenant: While the psalmist’s focus is on God’s law in the Old Testament, as Christians, we understand that the coming of Jesus Christ ushered in the new covenant. The new covenant emphasizes the fulfilment of the law through Christ (Matthew 5:17) and the importance of love, faith, and grace. Thus, our commitment to keeping God’s law extends to living out the principles of the new covenant through faith in Jesus Christ.
