Psalms 119:43

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

And take not the word of trueth vtterly out of my mouth: for I haue hoped in thy iudgements. Psalms 119:43 (KJV)

Note: This quotation is not found in any verse of Psalm 119.

Context: Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is a beautiful expression of the psalmist’s love for God’s law and his desire to live according to its precepts. It consists of 22 stanzas, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with each verse within a stanza starting with the same letter. The stanza traditionally identified by the Hebrew letter Vav (sometimes rendered “Vau”) represents the letter “v” in Hebrew.

Importance of God’s Word: The language of the quotation echoes the psalmist’s deep reverence and reliance on God’s Word, a central theme throughout the chapter. The psalmist consistently emphasizes the significance of God’s truth and its transformative power in his life, pleading that the word of truth not be taken from his mouth.

Prayer for Continual Proclamation: The desire expressed—to continually speak and proclaim God’s truth—reflects the psalmist’s broader commitment in Psalm 119 to proclaim and uphold the law. He recognizes that the word of truth is essential for guidance, teaching, and living a righteous life, and his prayer highlights a commitment to being a faithful witness and sharing God’s truth with others.

Hope in God’s Judgments: The psalmist’s hope in God’s judgments reveals his confidence in God’s righteous standards and divine justice. He repeatedly declares trust in God’s wisdom and guidance, understanding that God’s judgments are just, reliable, and provide a solid foundation for hope. This hope aligns with numerous verses in Psalm 119 that affirm confidence in God’s righteous standards.

Application: As believers today, we can draw several lessons from the themes of Psalm 119. We should value and hold fast to God’s Word, treasuring it in our hearts and minds. We should strive to be faithful witnesses, not only through our actions but also through our words, proclaiming the truth of God’s Word to those around us. Additionally, we can find hope and confidence in God’s righteous judgments, knowing that His ways are perfect and trustworthy.
