Psalms 119:55

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

I haue remembred thy name, O Lord, in the night, and haue kept thy Law. Psalms 119:55 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Book of Psalms and is divided into sections, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is a profound expression of the psalmist’s love for God’s law and his commitment to obeying it. The psalm highlights the value of God’s Word and the blessings that come from meditating on and living according to it.

Remembering God’s Name: In this verse the psalmist declares that he remembers the name of the Lord. The name of God represents His character, attributes, and authority. Remembering God’s name signifies a deep awareness of who He is and an acknowledgement of His sovereignty and lordship over all things. It reflects a personal relationship with God and a desire to honor Him in all circumstances, even during the night, when distractions and worries may arise.

Reflecting on God’s Law: The psalmist also mentions keeping God’s law. The law here refers to God’s commandments and instructions given to His people. The psalmist affirms his commitment to obeying God’s law, which demonstrates his reverence for God and his desire to live in accordance with His will. It shows that the psalmist recognizes the value and importance of following God’s ways in every aspect of life.

Application:

  • Intimacy with God: The psalmist’s act of remembering God’s name and his declaration of keeping God’s statutes suggest a close and intimate relationship with the Lord. Believers should strive to cultivate a deep connection with God by spending time in prayer, meditation, and studying His Word, growing in understanding of who He is and experiencing His presence.
  • Consistency in obedience: The psalmist’s commitment to keeping God’s law challenges believers to be consistent in obedience to God’s commands. Faith is to be lived out not only during the day but also in the darkest moments of life, with devotion that is unwavering regardless of circumstances.
  • Meditating on God’s Word: Throughout Psalm 119 the psalmist repeatedly emphasizes the importance of meditating on God’s law. Meditating involves pondering, reflecting, and internalizing Scripture, which provides wisdom, guidance, and encouragement for the journey of faith.
  • Trusting God at all times: Remembering God’s name in the night and keeping His statutes signifies trust in His providence and protection. It reflects reliance on God’s faithfulness even when darkness surrounds us. By trusting the Lord and keeping His law, believers can find comfort and strength in His promises, knowing He is always with them.
