Psalms 119:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into a Bible study on Psalm 119:12, using the King James Version (KJV) as requested.

Psalm 119:12 (KJV) says:

“Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.”

1. Understanding the Context:

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Book of Psalms and is known for its focus on God’s law, statutes, commandments, and the psalmist’s love for them. It is an acrostic psalm, consisting of 22 sections, each corresponding to a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The verse in question is found in the Beth section, which contains verses 9-16.

2. Gratitude and Recognition:

The psalmist begins by acknowledging and blessing the Lord. This verse expresses reverence and a heart of worship. It recognizes God as the source of all wisdom and understanding.

3. The Desire for Instruction:

The psalmist requests the Lord to teach him His statutes. This reflects a humble and teachable heart, seeking God’s guidance and instruction. The psalmist recognizes that God’s statutes are essential for leading a blessed and righteous life.

4. Understanding “Statutes”:

In the Old Testament, “statutes” refer to God’s laws and commandments given to the Israelites. These statutes covered various aspects of life, including moral, ethical, and ceremonial practices. They were intended to guide the people in their relationship with God and with one another.

5. Seeking God’s Teaching:

The psalmist desires to be taught by God personally. This signifies a deeper relationship and dependency on God for understanding His Word. It reflects an earnest longing to comprehend and live in accordance with God’s statutes.

6. Application to Our Lives:

As believers today, we can draw important lessons from this verse. It encourages us to approach God with reverence and gratitude, acknowledging Him as the source of all wisdom. It teaches us to have a humble and teachable spirit, seeking God’s instruction through His Word, the Bible. Like the psalmist, we should desire to understand and follow God’s statutes, recognizing their significance in leading a blessed and righteous life.
