Psalms 119:9

Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

Psalms 119:9 (KJV)

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, an acrostic poem built around the Hebrew alphabet. Verse 9 opens the second stanza, marked by the letter Beth. The whole psalm celebrates God’s Word—His law, statutes, precepts, and commandments—and the blessing of those who love and obey them. Here the psalmist asks a question that shapes the rest of the stanza: how can a young man keep his way pure?

The question in verse 9 is rhetorical, and the psalmist answers it immediately: “by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” The Hebrew word translated “cleanse” can also mean “keep pure” or “purify,” and “way” refers to one’s course of life or conduct. The answer is not human effort alone but careful, deliberate attention to God’s Word—guarding one’s path according to its commands. The verse names a young man because young people are especially vulnerable to defiling sins and sensual pleasures, yet the principle applies to every believer.

The next verse continues the thought with a prayer for God’s help in staying faithful to His commands. This connection shows that cleansing one’s way is not merely external but flows from a heart that seeks God. The psalmist recognizes his dependence on divine help, approaching God’s Word with humility and trusting the Holy Spirit to empower obedience and holiness.

God’s Word is the divinely appointed means for moral and spiritual cleansing. To cleanse our ways, we must actively read, study, and meditate on Scripture, allowing it to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. This goes beyond outward purification; it is the transformation of the inner being and character. As we take heed to God’s Word, it renews our minds, purifies our hearts, and gives us wisdom and strength to resist temptation.

This verse calls us to a deliberate posture of attention and obedience. It reminds us that purity of life is not achieved by our own resolve but by aligning our steps with God’s Word. As we seek Him in Scripture, we find the guidance and grace to walk in righteousness.
