Psalms 119:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.”

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, consisting of 176 verses. It is a beautiful expression of the psalmist’s love and devotion to God’s law. Each section of this psalm begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with eight verses assigned to each letter.

Verse: “I will praise thee with uprightness of heart when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.” (Psalm 119:7, KJV)

Understanding the context:Psalm 119 is a meditation on God’s law and its significance in the life of the psalmist. The psalmist expresses a deep desire to follow God’s commands and seeks understanding and guidance from God’s Word.

Praising God:The verse begins with a declaration of praise: “I will praise thee.” The psalmist acknowledges that true praise and worship should come from a heart that is aligned with God’s will and characterized by righteousness.

Uprightness of heart:The psalmist desires to praise God with “uprightness of heart.” This phrase indicates the psalmist’s intention to approach God with sincerity, integrity, and a pure heart. True worship involves aligning our thoughts, attitudes, and actions with God’s righteous standards.

Learning God’s righteous judgments:The psalmist recognizes that in order to have an upright heart and offer true praise, he must first learn and understand God’s righteous judgments. God’s judgments refer to His laws, commandments, and principles as revealed in the Scriptures. The psalmist seeks to study and comprehend these principles to guide his thoughts and actions.

The importance of learning:The psalmist’s attitude of learning reveals his commitment to growing in his knowledge and understanding of God’s ways. The psalmist recognizes that true praise and upright living stem from a solid foundation of God’s Word.

Application for us:This verse encourages us to approach God with sincerity, integrity, and a heart that seeks to understand and apply His righteous judgments. As we study and meditate on God’s Word, it equips us to live in a manner that pleases and glorifies Him.
