Psalms 119:42

Posted on 18 May at 15:13

“So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.”

Context:Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and is known for its focus on the importance and value of God’s law and word. It consists of 176 verses, divided into sections based on the Hebrew alphabet, with each section beginning with a letter of the alphabet.

The Value of God’s Word:In verse 42, the psalmist expresses confidence in God’s word as the source of his response to those who reproach him. The psalmist relies on the word of God to provide a solid foundation for his defence. This verse highlights the psalmist’s trust in the reliability, truthfulness, and guidance found in God’s word.

Defending Against Reproach:The term “reproach” refers to criticism, slander, or insults directed towards the psalmist. When faced with reproach, the psalmist finds strength and a suitable response through the Word of God. It emphasises the power of God’s word to equip and empower believers to withstand the attacks of others and to provide a righteous defence.

Trusting in God’s Word:The psalmist’s trust in God’s word is key to his ability to answer those who reproach him. Trusting in God’s word means having confidence in its truth, relying on its promises, and living in accordance with its teachings. This trust enables the psalmist to respond with wisdom, integrity, and righteousness when faced with opposition or criticism.

Application for Believers:This verse offers an important lesson for believers today. When we encounter reproach or criticism because of our faith or adherence to God’s principles, we can find solace, strength, and answers in God’s word. By immersing ourselves in Scripture, meditating on its truths, and allowing it to shape our lives, we can respond to reproach with grace, love, and the wisdom that comes from God.
