Psalms 128:6

Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Israel.

Psalms 128:6 (KJV)

Psalm 128 is one of the Songs of Ascents, sung by Jewish pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. The psalm teaches that the Lord blesses those who fear Him and walk in His ways. This final verse gathers those promises into two gifts: seeing grandchildren and peace upon Israel.

The first promise, “thou shalt see thy children’s children,” means the joy of watching your family continue after you. In ancient Israel, grandchildren were a sign of God’s favor and a reward for a faithful life. This was not only about length of days but about leaving a lasting legacy of faith and wisdom.

The second phrase, “peace upon Israel,” is a prayer for the whole nation. The Hebrew word for peace, shalom, means more than the absence of war. It includes wholeness, safety, and spiritual well-being. The psalmist asks that the same blessing given to one faithful household would spread to the entire community of God’s people.

This peace is tied to the blessing from Zion in Psalm 128:5 and echoes the prayer in Psalm 125:5. In the Old Testament, seeing grandchildren was also a sign of blessing for Joseph (Genesis 50:23) and Job (Job 42:16). These examples show that God delights to give His servants the joy of a continuing family line.

We can apply this verse by valuing family relationships and investing time to strengthen them. We should also be intentional about passing down our faith and values to the next generation, both at home and in the wider church. Finally, we can pray for peace, not only for ourselves but for our communities and nations, asking God to bring wholeness and harmony.

  • Treasure the gift of family and nurture those bonds.

  • Leave a godly legacy by teaching children and grandchildren to follow the Lord.

  • Pray for the peace and flourishing of the whole people of God.

This verse connects personal blessing with the good of the whole community. A faithful life is never only private; it strengthens the family and the nation. As we walk in God’s ways, we can trust Him to give us joy in our descendants and to extend His peace beyond our own homes.
