Psalms 125:5

As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

Context

Psalm 125 is one of the Psalms of Ascents, sung by Israelites traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. These songs encouraged pilgrims and reminded them of God’s faithfulness. This final verse closes the psalm with a clear contrast between those who turn from God and those who trust in Him.

Meaning

The phrase “as for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways” describes people who leave the path of obedience. They may have once professed faith, but under pressure or temptation they abandon God’s commands. Their ways are crooked because they do not match God’s straight and holy standard. Such people are often called carnal professors—they have claimed to follow God but, when tested, desert the good ways they once embraced.

The Lord “shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity.” This is not a gentle guide; it is a judicial act. God brings them out to face judgment together with open sinners. The Targum even adds “to hell,” showing the seriousness of this separation. They will not escape the consequences of their choices.

In contrast, “peace shall be upon Israel.” The Hebrew word for peace, shalom, means wholeness, security, and well-being. This peace comes from a right relationship with God. It is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God’s favor.

Biblical connections

The psalm earlier compares those who trust in the Lord to Mount Zion, which cannot be moved. That stability belongs to the faithful. Here the unstable are led away, while the faithful remain under God’s peace. This connection shows that God distinguishes between true believers and those who only appear faithful. The same contrast appears throughout Scripture: God knows those who are His, and He will separate them from the wicked at the final judgment.

Application

This verse warns against hypocrisy. It is possible to know God’s ways and still turn aside. The call is to examine our hearts and remain faithful, especially when following God becomes difficult. We must not let fear or desire pull us from His path.

It also comforts those who stay faithful. Even when the wicked seem to prosper, God sees and will act. His peace rests on those who trust in Him, and that peace is a present reality, not only a future hope. The security of the faithful is certain because God Himself is their keeper.

Reflection

God’s justice and mercy meet in this verse. He will not confuse the faithful with the unfaithful. His peace is a gift to those who persevere. Let us hold firmly to His ways, knowing that He leads His people with care and judges the crooked with fairness.
