Psalms 126:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:12
Listen to this article

“Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.”

1. Historical Context: Psalm 126 is one of the Psalms of Ascents (Psalms 120-134) that were likely sung by pilgrims as they ascended to Jerusalem for the annual feasts.

It is believed that this particular psalm was composed after the Babylonian exile when the Israelites returned to their homeland.

2. The Restoration of Zion: The psalm begins with a reflection on the restoration of Zion. The Israelites were filled with joy and laughter when they witnessed God’s faithfulness in bringing them back from exile to their land.

It was a time of great rejoicing, as they experienced the fulfillment of God’s promises and recognised His hand at work.

3. Proclaiming God’s Greatness: The verse highlights the response of the surrounding nations to the Israelites’ restoration. The heathen or nations observed the miraculous deliverance and acknowledged that the Lord had done great things for His people.

The joy and thanksgiving of the Israelites testified to the greatness and faithfulness of God. Their praise became a powerful testimony that impacted those around them.

4. Application to Believers: As believers, we can draw encouragement from this verse. Just as God restored His people in the past, He is still in the business of doing great things today.

When we experience His faithfulness and deliverance in our lives, it should fill us with joy and praise. Our testimony of God’s work can also influence others, causing them to recognise His greatness.

5. Gratitude and Worship: This verse emphasises the importance of gratitude and worship. When we acknowledge and appreciate God’s blessings and deliverance, our hearts overflow with joy, laughter, and singing.

Expressing gratitude and praise not only honours God but also brings joy and encouragement to our own lives.

6. Reflecting on God’s Faithfulness: Psalm 126:2 reminds us to reflect on God’s faithfulness in our lives. We should take time to remember how He has intervened, provided, and brought us through challenging times.

Remembering God’s past faithfulness helps us to trust Him in our current circumstances and face the future with confidence.
