Psalms 138:2

I will worship towards thy holy temple, and praise thy name, for thy louing kindnesse and for thy trueth: for thou hast magnified thy word aboue all thy name. Psalms 138:2 (KJV)

Psalm 138 is a psalm of David that expresses his heartfelt gratitude and praise to God. It is a song of thanksgiving that acknowledges God’s faithfulness and exalts His name.

In this verse David declares his intention to worship toward God’s holy sanctuary. The Tabernacle or temple was the physical place where Israel offered sacrifices and worshiped the Lord. David’s desire to worship toward the sanctuary symbolizes his reverence and devotion to God’s presence. While believers today do not have a physical temple, we can still approach God in reverence, worshiping Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).

David praises God’s name for His loving‑kindness, a term that denotes God’s steadfast love, mercy, and faithfulness toward His people. Throughout the Psalms David repeatedly emphasizes this loving‑kindness, recognizing that it endures forever (see Psalm 136:1). It is demonstrated in God’s compassion, forgiveness, and unwavering love for His creation.

The verse also mentions God’s truth. By praising God’s truth David affirms the reliability, faithfulness, and trustworthiness of God’s promises. In a world filled with uncertainties and falsehoods, God’s truth stands firm and unchanging, providing a solid foundation for belief.

The latter part of the verse states that God has magnified His word above all His name. This highlights the supreme authority of Scripture. God’s word—His divine revelation found in the Bible—contains His truth, instructions, promises, and the plan of salvation. It takes precedence over any other guide, even over the name of God Himself, underscoring its absolute value and significance in the life of a believer.

As believers we should approach God with a heart of worship and gratitude, acknowledging His loving‑kindness, faithfulness, and the supremacy of His word. We are called to diligently study, meditate on, and apply God’s word, recognizing its unparalleled authority and life‑transforming power. May this study of Psalm 138:2 deepen your understanding of David’s praise and inspire you to worship God with reverence, gratitude, and a deep appreciation for His word.
