Proverbs 17:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. These proverbs offer practical advice for living a righteous and discerning life before God and within society. Proverbs 17:19 is found within a larger section of proverbs that address themes of wisdom, relationships, and the consequences of various behaviours.

Interpretation:a) “He loveth transgression that loveth strife”: This phrase suggests that someone who loves contention and conflict is also drawn to disobedience and wrongdoing. Engaging in strife and quarrels can lead to sinful behaviour, as it often involves pride, anger, and an unwillingness to seek peace.

b) “He that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction”: This verse warns against the pursuit of pride and self-exaltation. “Gate” can symbolize one’s position or status, and “exalteth” implies a desire to elevate oneself. Seeking personal glory and prominence at the expense of others can ultimately result in ruin and destruction.

Application:

  • Avoiding strife:As followers of God, we are called to pursue peace and unity (Romans 12:18). Instead of seeking out conflicts or engaging in quarrels, we should strive to be peacemakers and pursue reconciliation. This involves practising forgiveness, humility, and a willingness to listen and understand others.
  • Rejecting transgression:Loving strife can lead to sinful behaviour, as mentioned in this verse. Instead, we should cultivate a heart that seeks righteousness and holiness. We should avoid engaging in actions or conversations that promote division, slander, or discord.
  • Humility and contentment:The warning against exalting one’s gate reminds us to embrace humility and contentment in our lives. Pride can blind us to our own faults and hinder our relationships with God and others. By recognising our dependence on God and embracing humility, we can find true fulfilment and avoid the destructive path of self-exaltation.
  • Seeking God’s wisdom:Proverbs is a treasure trove of wisdom, and studying its teachings can guide us in making wise choices. By regularly reading and meditating on the Scriptures, seeking God’s guidance through prayer, and applying the principles of wisdom in our lives, we can navigate relationships and circumstances with discernment and avoid the pitfalls mentioned in this verse.

In summary, Proverbs 17:19 warns against loving strife and seeking personal exaltation. It encourages us to pursue peace, reject transgression, embrace humility, and seek God’s wisdom in our daily lives. By heeding these lessons, we can cultivate healthy relationships, avoid destructive behaviours, and grow in our walk with God.
