Proverbs 27:3

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool’s wrath is heavier than them both.

Proverbs 27:3 (KJV)

Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, mostly from King Solomon, offering practical guidance for daily living. This verse uses the physical weight of a stone and sand to picture the burden of a fool’s wrath. In ancient times, carrying stones or sand was hard labor, yet the proverb says a fool’s anger is even harder to bear.

The Hebrew word for “wrath” means anger or provocation. A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty, but the anger of a foolish person presses down on others even more. This is not about physical weight but about the emotional and social burden that uncontrolled anger creates. The verse teaches that a fool’s wrath is a severe and oppressive thing to endure, and it encourages us to recognize its destructive nature.

This proverb aligns with Jesus’ teaching about the danger of unresolved anger and the call to be reconciled (Matthew 5:21-26). Both passages show that anger, left unchecked, harms relationships and burdens the heart. Wisdom in Proverbs consistently warns against folly and promotes self-control, a theme echoed in New Testament teachings on anger.

We should avoid provoking a fool to anger, and we must examine our own hearts. When we feel angry, we can choose to respond with patience and seek peace. This verse also encourages us to be slow to anger, knowing that a harsh word or a hot temper can crush those around us. Ask God for the wisdom to control your spirit.

Consider the weight of your own words and reactions. Do you bring rest or heaviness to others? Ask God for the wisdom to control your spirit and to be a source of peace, not a burden.
