Matthew 5:23

“Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;”

Context:This verse is situated within a section where Jesus discusses various aspects of the law and righteousness. In the preceding verses, Jesus talks about reconciling with others and resolving conflicts. In verse 23, Jesus addresses the issue of a believer coming to the altar to offer a gift to God while being aware of a conflict or unresolved issue with their brother.

Let’s break down this verse and explore its implications:

"Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar": In the context of the time, the altar refers to the place of sacrifice in the temple. It was a central location for offering gifts and worshiping God.

"And there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee": Jesus emphasizes the importance of personal relationships and the need for reconciliation. If a person remembers that their brother (another believer or even someone in general) has a legitimate grievance against them, they are called to take action.

The verse implies that bringing a gift to God’s altar, an act of worship, should not be done while ignoring or neglecting the responsibility of reconciling with those we have wronged. It highlights the importance of maintaining healthy relationships and dealing with unresolved conflicts.

The following verses, Matthew 5:24-26, provide further guidance on how to handle such a situation:

"Leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing."

These verses emphasize the urgency of resolving conflicts promptly and seeking reconciliation. Jesus advises leaving the gift before the altar and prioritizing reconciliation with the offended party before proceeding with worship.
