Proverbs 31:18

She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

Proverbs 31:18 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the closing chapter of Proverbs, which describes a woman of noble character (Proverbs 31:10-31). The passage gives a picture of godly wisdom at work in daily life. It is not a command for every woman to follow the same tasks, but a model of faithful living for all believers.

The first part says, “She perceiveth that her merchandise is good.” The Hebrew word for “merchandise” can also mean “gain” or “earning.” She examines what she produces or trades and knows it has real value. This shows discernment and skill, not just hard work. She understands quality and can judge her own efforts honestly.

The second part says, “her candle goeth not out by night.” In ancient homes, a lamp was kept burning for safety and readiness. Here it pictures her diligence and vigilance. She does not stop when the day ends; she continues to care for her household. The lamp that stays lit also suggests faithful, steady labor.

This verse connects with the wider teaching of Proverbs that wisdom is practical. In Proverbs 31, wisdom appears in buying fields, weaving cloth, and managing servants. The Septuagint, an early Greek translation, renders the phrase as “she finds by experience that working is good.” This emphasizes that she has learned the value of her labor through practice, not just theory.

Believers can examine their own work, whether in business, home, or service, and ask if it is good and honest. The verse encourages careful effort and wise use of time. It also reminds us that godly character includes competence and responsibility, not only prayer and devotion.

The woman’s lamp burning at night is a quiet picture of faithfulness. It invites us to consider our own diligence. Do we work with discernment and perseverance, even when no one watches? This verse calls us to serve God through ordinary tasks with excellence and steady commitment.
