Proverbs 31:21

Listen to this article

“She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.”

Context:Proverbs 31 is often referred to as the “virtuous woman” chapter, which provides a description of an excellent wife or woman of noble character. It offers wisdom and guidance for women, as well as principles for all individuals to live a life of integrity and honour.

Fearlessness:The verse begins by highlighting the woman’s fearlessness in the face of snow. The mention of snow signifies adverse and challenging conditions. This verse emphasises the woman’s ability to face difficult circumstances head-on, demonstrating her strength and resilience.

Responsibility:The phrase “for her household” emphasises the woman’s role as a caretaker and provider for her family. It reveals her sense of responsibility and her dedication to meeting the needs of her loved ones. She doesn’t shy away from the challenges that may arise due to inclement weather, but instead takes proactive measures to ensure the well-being and comfort of her household.

Scarlet Clothing:The mention of “scarlet” clothing signifies the quality and care with which she provides for her household. Scarlet was a colour associated with wealth and luxury in ancient times. This suggests that the woman goes above and beyond mere necessity, ensuring that her family is clothed with excellence and distinction.

Symbolic Meaning:Beyond the literal interpretation, this verse holds symbolic meaning as well. Snow can represent the trials and difficulties of life, while scarlet symbolises the strength and victory that come through overcoming challenges. The virtuous woman serves as an example of how to face hardships fearlessly and emerge triumphant, providing for her household in every aspect.

Application:As readers, we can learn from this verse by cultivating qualities such as fearlessness, responsibility, and a commitment to providing for our families. It encourages us to face challenges head-on, showing determination and resilience. Moreover, it reminds us to care for our loved ones not just adequately, but with excellence and love.

  • Spiritual Application:From a spiritual perspective, this verse can also point to our relationship with God. Just as the virtuous woman is unafraid of the snow, we should not fear the trials and tribulations of life because we have God’s presence and strength with us. He promises to provide for our needs and equip us to face any challenge that comes our way.
